Tips

For who likes to learn

In this route, we could tell you about the depth of the sea of Maratea or the Crypt of the Original Sin of Matera, but if you chose to stay in our B&B, you probably prefer the small things to the large ones, the authenticity of genuine things to the trends of the moment. And with a gesture of nonconformity, we want to lead you to explore the hinterland, so severe in its features, but so generous to a curious tourist.

Today’s route starts from Corleto Perticara, destination Calvello (PZ) (about 30km from Corleto P.). In this inland valley people create ceramics since 1500. It’s a very old tradition: always in small workshops, they’re often family-runs, where men shape the clay with their hands, while women dosing various colors for decorating objects with the classic “Bird” which has become the ‘ emblem of Calvello ceramic. The ritual is always the same for centuries: it starts from the block of clay then moved on to foot lathe and with free hand movements –only for experts- the clay obtains the outer shape. The pieces obtained are dried and then baked in the oven. Starts now the painting phase: artwork done! After admiring the ancient wisdom of the ancient craftsmen, we want to lead you to become better acquainted with the new face of Basilicata, oil-producing region. Our journey continues, therefore, to the Learning Center “Energia e Territorio” (Energy and territory) of Calvello, where you can visit a permanent photo exhibition entitled “Oil in Basilicata by the time of the pioneers to the present day 1949-2009”. It’s an important exhibition that tells, without any rhetoric, how the face of this region is profoundly changed and how the modern Lucan craftsmen actually work on the oil well towers.

On your way back, stop at Laurenzana, another village of the province of Potenza. Stop to take some pictures to the historical center, the old castle that was recently rebuilt. If your trip is during Summer, don’t miss the procession “Madonna del Carmine” – in July- or the colorful Summer Carnival – in August-, that is not a native festival, but the result of globalization, capable to express the will of a group of young people to animate, ironically, their own territory.
